A chance to travel to Bangkok in Thailand to see the International Indian Film Academy Awards firsthand!
Working with other Leeds Met volunteers I assisted by gathering promotional video footage, photography and carrying out interviews.
The Among Us Foundation is a non-profit organisation for both adults with physical and learning disabilities and the homeless in Lublin, Poland.
For my final year degree project I travelled to the centre with a group of students and a translator in order to produce a multilingual website and accompanying documentary film that showcases and raises awareness of their work. I later produced a blog and continued to update and maintain the website for several years after graduating.
As part of the International Volunteering Projects run by Leeds Met I worked alongside a team of volunteers within two arts therapy centres in Lublin, Poland. Working with adults who have physical and learning disabilities was an incredibly rewarding experience.
Competing against other universities within Yorkshire, our team developed, planned and pitched a business strategy to a panel of ‘Dragon’s Den’ style judges. We not only won the £500 prize money but also enhanced our commercial awareness, team working and employability skills!
Whilst representing Leeds Met at ‘VentureFest’ (one of the largest conferences in the region) an enterprise business game challenged us to create a concept, product or service to sell to the 2000+ delegates.
With only 24 hours and a budget of £50 our team came up with a carnival style attraction we named ‘Beat The Boss’. This game had both school children and business professionals alike queuing up to play and secured first place!
Internship completed as part of my Sandwich Degree. I was based with the Web and Multimedia, Graphics and Creative Design teams and produced branding for events and design for print / web.
I worked with both colleagues across the Communications and Marketing department, face to face with external clients and directly addressed members of the public. This position also gave me the experience of working directly with printers, web developers, video editors and copywriters.
The 33rd International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH), is a highly prestigious multimedia technology conference held in the USA.
Our team’s group project ‘Lohner’ was awarded a prize (and after Leeds Met kindly agreed to fund our trip with £1.5k) we travelled to Boston to attend the ceremony.
Work placement secured over the Summer of 2006 at this busy marketing agency. This was my first look inside a design studio and a huge inspiration, which effected the direction of my creative career. I was allowed to be involved in every aspect of the production process, assisting senior team members with multimedia projects.
My time here was a valuable learning experience and gave me a much greater understanding of the inner workings behind a digitally-driven business. A massive opportunity and one I will always be grateful for!
For my graduation award ceremony I was featured in the Yorkshire Evening Post with an article ‘Katherine Hits The Ground Running’.
It was an amazing day and my Mum was very proud!
Working with a team of students and a professional film crew I captured video footage of the ‘Carnegie Great Student Run.’
Since we were filming a live event there were no re-takes and so keeping calm under pressure and co-operating with team-mates was essential.
These roles gave me the ability to deal with customers both face to face and by phone, to negotiate solutions to problems, to use my skills of persuasion in selling products and services and most importantly gave me a passion for working with people that I’ve never lost.
This was a great start to my career and grounded my knowledge and understanding of customer service.
The customer is always right!
Companies I worked with include: British Home Stores, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Allders, Littlewoods, Halifax PLC, Dorothy Perkins, Consignia (Royal Mail) and Green Flag: Motoring Assistance First Response.
Everyone has to start somewhere and I began my career with a weekend job shovelling ??
I learned all about stable management, mucking out, feeding and grooming the horses. I also led guided hacks and lead-rein rides for beginners.
By the end I was even teaching the other kids how to ride!
